Creation
Area code 606 was introduced in 1955 as the 100th code in the United States. It was one of four new that year and became the second code for the state of Kentucky. In 2000, part of the area covered by 606 was split off to create a new 859, which required some phone numbers to change. Today, Kentucky has a total of five area cods.
